What if you could choose your learning project? Would that change things? What if you could choose what you could study? Would that make a difference to your interest in school? We decided to give our students that opportunity. Research shows that choice increases motivation in Middle School students. So choice is what we are giving our students. Allowing them to create a passion project a project of their choice. We are giving 2-4 lessons a week to this so students feel that it is a valuable and important part of their education The project incorporates six basic steps: Inspire – Students are inspired with ideas to help make a choice that reflects their passion. Planning – Students research and brainstorm so as to develop real life learning around their passion. Networking – Students work with a mentor and look for help from those in the industry or university. Designing – students use the design process to continue to develop and design their passion product. Promoting – Students use entrepreneurial skills to promote their product or cause. They might even go global with the web and end up with web page that goes viral for all the right reasons Creating and showcasing – What is the point of doing something fantastic if you don’t get to show it off to people. At the end of each semester, students have an opportunity to showcase their creation to the school community.
Now to make sure or school community also jumps on board and sees the value in the shift to student centred teaching.
